    CGPA Calculation — A Complete Guide

    CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of grade points for all courses completed. It's the primary measure of academic performance in Indian engineering colleges (IITs, NITs, VTU, Anna University, etc.) and increasingly in commerce and arts colleges too.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). You multiply each subject's grade point by its credit hours, sum all these, and divide by total credits.

    Most Indian universities use: Percentage = (CGPA × 10) or Percentage = (CGPA - 0.5) × 10 (VTU formula). CBSE uses: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 for Class 10. Always check your university's specific conversion formula.

    CGPA (Cumulative GPA) represents your overall average across all semesters of your course. GPA (Grade Point Average) typically refers to a single semester's average. CGPA is the running average of all GPAs.

    Generally: 9+ CGPA = Excellent (equivalent to 85%+), 8–9 CGPA = Very Good (75–85%), 7–8 = Good (65–75%), 6–7 = Average (55–65%), Below 6 = Below Average. Most top companies set a minimum of 6.5–7.0 CGPA for campus placements.
