What is GST? A Simple Explanation

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India. Introduced on July 1, 2017, it replaced a complex web of central and state taxes including VAT, service tax, excise duty, and octroi. GST follows the principle of "one nation, one tax."

    Frequently Asked Questions

India has 4 main GST slabs: 5% (essential items like packaged food, footwear under ₹1000), 12% (computers, processed food), 18% (most goods and services, telecom, IT services), and 28% (luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco). Some items like fresh vegetables, milk, and eggs are exempt (0% GST).

For intra-state transactions (within the same state), GST is split equally between CGST (Central) and SGST (State). For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) is levied at the full rate. Example: 18% GST on intra-state = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. On inter-state = 18% IGST.

To add GST: GST Amount = (Price × GST Rate) / 100. Total = Price + GST Amount. To remove GST from inclusive price: Original Price = (Inclusive Price × 100) / (100 + GST Rate). GST Amount = Inclusive Price − Original Price.

Businesses with annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for services) must register for GST. E-commerce sellers must register regardless of turnover. Voluntary registration is also allowed for smaller businesses who want to claim input tax credit.

ITC allows businesses to deduct the GST they paid on purchases from the GST they collected on sales, paying only the net GST to the government. Example: You paid ₹1800 GST on raw materials and collected ₹3600 GST on sales — you pay only ₹1800 to the government.

Most professional services like IT services, consulting, accounting, legal services, digital marketing, and advertising fall under the 18% GST slab. Some specific services like healthcare and education are exempt or attract 0% GST.
